The Learning Village News | April 2020

In Addis Ababa, with a population conservatively estimated at nearly 5 million, overcrowding is a way of life. Social distancing is easier said than done. Whether it is at the marketplace, at churches, in buses, or in any social gatherings, there is always a crowd. Housing shortage often forces large numbers of family members to live together in small quarters. Hygiene and sanitation are still major problems. Toilets and hand washing facilities, if available, are seldom in working condition. It is understandable why people are terrified by the news about the COVID-19 pandemic. The health care infrastructure is already seriously under-resourced and over-stretched with existing problems, making it difficult to handle coronavirus cases. Even testing for the coronavirus is a resource-intensive process. On top of it all, the economic impact is likely to be catastrophic. The impact is already being felt at the Kalala Learning Village.
